چکیده

We define the energy of a perfectly isolated system at a given retarded time as the suitable null limit of the quasilocal energy E. The result coincides with the Bondi-Sachs mass. Our E is the lapse-unity shift-zero boundary value of the gravitational Hamiltonian appropriate for the partial system Σ contained within a finite topologically spherical boundaryB = ∂Σ. Moreover, we show that with an arbitrary lapse and zero shift the same null limit of the Hamiltonian defines a physically meaningful element in the space dual to supertranslations. This result is specialized to yield an expression for the full Bondi-Sachs four-momentum in terms of Hamiltonian values. ∗Preprint numbers: NCSU/CTMP/013, TUW-10-96, IFP-730-UNC and TAR-054-UNC †Email addresses: david [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected]

Metric-based Hamiltonians, null boundaries, and isolated horizons

We extend the quasilocal (metric-based) Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity so that it may be used to study regions of spacetime with null boundaries. In particular we use this generalized Brown-York formalism to study the physics of isolated horizons. We show that the first law of isolated horizon mechanics follows directly from the first variation of the Hamiltonian. This variation ...

Detailed Modeling and Novel Scheduling of Plug-in Electric Vehicle Energy Storage Systems for Energy Management of Multi-microgrids Considering the Probability of Fault Occurrence

As an effective means of displacing fossil fuel consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have attracted more and more attentions. From the power grid perspective, PHEVs and PEVs equipped with batteries can also be used as energy storage facilities, due to the fact that, these vehicles are parked most of the ...

un 2 00 9 Limit of quasilocal mass at spatial infinity

We study the limit of quasilocal mass defined in [4] and [5] for a family of spacelike 2-surfaces in spacetime. In particular, we show the limit coincides with the ADM mass at spatial infinity. The limit for coordinate spheres of a boosted slice of the Schwarzchild solution is computed explicitly and shown to give the expected energymomentum four-vector. 1 Limit of quasilocal energy 1 2 In [4] ...

Quasilocal energy for a Kerr black hole.

The quasilocal energy associated with a constant stationary time slice of the Kerr spacetime is presented. The calculations are based on a recent proposal [1] in which quasilocal energy is derived from the Hamiltonian of spatially bounded gravitational systems. Three different classes of boundary surfaces for the Kerr slice are considered (constant radius surfaces, round spheres, and the ergosu...

Quasilocal energy and conserved charges derived from the gravitational action.

The quasilocal energy of gravitational and matter fields in a spatially bounded region is obtained by employing a Hamilton–Jacobi analysis of the action functional. First, a surface stress–energy–momentum tensor is defined by the functional derivative of the action with respect to the three–metric on B, the history of the system’s boundary. Energy density, momentum density, and spatial stress a...
